Business Books to Map Your Future
From start-up tips to personal finance, here are some books to help you jumpstart your business.
By Jane ApplegateOne of my New Year's resolutions was to dig through the towering piles of new business books and pick out a few winners to share with you. When corporate layoffs increase, as they have in recent months, there is a surge in first-time entrepreneurship. So let's start with a good book for those who are thinking about starting a business for the first time. Starting a Business One reason I love Kick Start Your Dream Business by Romanus Wolter is its layout--you don't have to read it straight through, but can flip through, looking for ideas in the margins, special "index card" box sections and more. For the multitasking entrepreneur with attention deficit disorder, this is a great feature. Kick Start covers a lot of ground on the practical considerations of starting a business, from manufacturing to packaging and trademarks. Wolter emphasizes the importance of careful research, a process that no one relishes. Wolter's great examples--including a makeup kit entrepreneur who found out the hard way that her perfect makeup bag was made from a plastic that melted in the sun--inspire us to dig in to those dreaded, but necessary, research chores.
